Working as an Interim Manager
If you have previous experience working as an Interim Manager then you already know the value you can bring to an organisation.
Equally you understand the value an assignment can add to your experience toolbox. Interim management is ideally suited to experienced executives who can rapidly integrate into an organisation and can provide fixed term continuity in a senior role or focus on a specific programme of resolution or development.
There are a number of competencies that define executives as suitable and circumstances that support this method of working. Firstly, good IM’s have high level experience and bring a deep specialism to an organisation. You must be able to point at specific and measurable deliverables in your career to date and be easily recognisable as a credible appointee in order to integrate quickly with permanent executives in the hiring organisation.
There is no honeymoon for IM’s and you are expected to deliver value from day one. Experienced IM’s consistently set short term achievable targets which they know, when delivered, will demonstrate value points of contribution to the organisation and its members. By its nature, IM’s spend time out of assignments and it is naturally important to be in a financial position to manage during periods when you are not working. Flexibility on location is important, particularly in the earlier years as you build your portfolio of successfully completed assignments.
Successful IM’s all have a number of common characteristics. They are capable of building rapport and trust quickly with permanent executives. They are perceptive to the informal and formal systems that exist in all organisations, learning quickly to work through these as necessary without getting distracted from purpose by them. Good IM’s are energetic and place a strong emphasis on task completion and deadline adherence. Naturally they are comfortable with change but understand that others are not always that way.
