Job description

This global healthcare company is committed to improving the health and well-being of people worldwide by developing, producing, and providing innovative healthcare services and solutions in more than 110 countries. With more than 80,000 employees globally, and over $40 billion in revenue per annum, this business primarily operates in multiple divisions including Pharmaceuticals, Medical Devices and Diagnostics.

Within its Diagnostics Division, there is significant investment at present, being undertaken in their operation in the West of Ireland. There is a growing R&D operation being developed here due to the introduction of three new products. An opportunity has arisen for a Computational Biologist to join this dynamic R&D team developing novel immunoassays.

You will support the implementation of work flows to screen novel biologics for diagnostic assay development. You will leverage your expertise in computational biology to support targeted biologics design to deliver best-in-class diagnostic assays and support target epitope mapping to facilitate optimal antibody selection. You will also analyse data, formulate conclusions, and determine future experiments. You should have expertise in computational/structural biology analysis and strong analytic and quantitative skills.

The Role

  • Development of structural/computational biology workflows and/or machine learning methods to analyse existing and design new, biomolecular structures.

  • Identify and engineer key attributes of diagnostic antibodies/antigens.

  • Conduct epitope mapping to support optimal antibody/antigen design and selection.

  • Maintain familiarity with state-of-the-art developments in the field; evaluate and transfer critical technologies for high throughput antibody function and develop ability screening.

  • Collaborate with a large interdisciplinary team of scientists, project and program leaders, and commercial partners.

  • Data analysis and interpretation to inform the global scientific and leadership team.

  • Contribute to ongoing innovation within the company through the introduction of the most recent trends in machine learning and computational protein design.

The Person

  • PhD degree in Computational, Chemical, or Structural Biology or related disciplines, or a BS/MS degree in the above disciplines with 2+ years of research experience.

  • The ideal candidate will have experience applying state-of-the-art machine learning and computational methods to design novel peptides and proteins, such as structural modelling and prediction, structure library generation, molecular docking, and multiparameter molecular property optimisation.

  • Strong computational/sequence analysis capabilities.

  • Proficient in Python and significant experience with relevant macromolecular modelling software (i.e. PyRosetta, AlphaFold, MOE, Schrödinger)

  • A good understanding of antibody structure and function.

  • Demonstrated success in developing, optimising, and troubleshooting techniques for protein/antibody characterisation.
